Ok so I have had this old shear for quite a while. I bought it about 18 months ago or so. It was first listed on Craigslist and on Practicalmachinest. It was for sale for 3500 bucks and I wanted it but just didnt have the 3500 to spend. It stayed up for sale for about 3 or 4 months and I finally called about it. The guy said he needed to make the room for a new piece of equipment he bought so i low balled him knowing he was in need of moving it and he agreed as long as I paid the wrecher bill and I even got him to split that with me...
The story goes as he told was he bought the shear from an auction in Rogers (just north of me) from a tool factory shutting thier doors some 25 or 30 years ago.
The machine was in pretty good shape and he hooked it up to his phase converter and showed it worked. I didn't know what shape the blades were but at the price I got it I really didn't care...
After talking to a friend that worked in a tool factory in Rogers he said he thought he remembered having some of those machines there. He also reminded me that my grandfather would have know best because his job there was machine maintenance, performeing mantenance and repairs on the machinery... He also said if it did come from a tool factory it would have came from there because it was the only factory of its sort in the area... The time line is about right because I found the name of the factory (Crane) and they shut thier doors in 1984...
After thinking more about the shear with an upcoming project (Tulips Axle Truss) I wanted to know more about its capacity. I have used it more than I would have thought. I put a bid on a job making some plates for Nissan Patrols for a guy on Pirate in south Texas and it paid for my investment including buying the phase converter...
I really think its cool that I have a machine like this and it has a story of probability of being tied to my grandfather...
Here is some pictures...
